|About Bill Plake|
I'm a an Alexander Technique teacher certified by the American Society for the Alexander Technique (AmSAT) and a professional saxophonist, flutist and composer. I am also certified as a personal fitness trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). Most of my work in personal fitness training is in integrated functional fitness, aimed primarily in helping de-conditioned and senior populations learn to exercise in a safe and effective manner.
I came to study the Alexander Technique because of a debilitating loss of functioning in my hands, which forced me to temporarily give up my musical career. After being deeply impressed with how I was able to help myself with the Alexander Technique, I decided to train to become a Certified Teacher. I completed my three-year training at the Alexander Training Institute of Los Angeles. And of course I've been able to resume my career as a musician. Read my story to learn how I've been able to help myself and restore my career with this remarkable work.
Besides maintaining a private teaching practice, I'm also a faculty member of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, teachingthe Alexander technique to actors, singers and dancers. I also teach the Alexander Technique as an adjunct at California Institute of the Arts to the music department, and as a guest lecturer at Pomona College.
As a musician I've performed and recorded with many noteworthy contemporary improvising musicians from the West Coast of the U.S. A few of the artists I've worked with are: Michael Vlatkovich, Vinny Golia, Charlie Haden, Nels and Alex Cline, Steuart Liebig, James Newton, (the late) John Carter, Larry Koonse, Matt Otto, Eric Barber, Rob Blakeslee, Harry Scorzo, Chris Garcia, Billy Mintz, William Roper and Kim Richmond.
